What is a Hitting Percentage?
Hitting percentage (also called attack percentage or kill percentage) is one of the most important statistics in volleyball. It measures how efficient you are when attacking the ball, taking into account your kills, errors, and total attempts.
Unlike simply counting kills, hitting percentage gives you a complete picture of your attacking effectiveness by penalizing errors and accounting for the total number of swings you take.
How to Calculate Hitting Percentage
The formula for hitting percentage is:
Hitting % = (Kills - Errors) ÷ Total Attempts
Where:
- Kills: Attacks that result in an immediate point (ball hits the floor on opponent's side or can't be returned)
- Errors: Attacks that result in a point for the other team (hit out of bounds, into the net, or blocked for a point)
- Total Attempts: Every time you swing at the ball to attack, regardless of outcome

What's a Good Hitting Percentage?
Hitting percentage benchmarks vary by level and position, but here are general guidelines:
- .400+ (Elite): College Division I starters and professional players
- .300-.399 (Excellent): Strong college players, advanced club players
- .200-.299 (Good): Solid high school varsity and competitive club players
- .100-.199 (Developing): High school JV, beginner club players
- Below .100: Focus on consistency and reducing errors
Note: Middle blockers typically have higher percentages (.350+) because they attack from closer to the net. Outside hitters and opposites average lower (.250-.350) due to longer, more difficult attacks.
Why Hitting Percentage Matters
Many players focus solely on kills, but hitting percentage tells a more complete story:
- Rewards efficiency over volume: 10 kills with 2 errors in 20 attempts (.400) is better than 15 kills with 10 errors in 40 attempts (.125)
- Highlights decision-making: A lower percentage might indicate you need to be more selective with your swings
- Reveals consistency: Great hitters maintain high percentages across entire matches, not just hot streaks
- Coaches love it: This is one of the first stats college recruiters look at
How to Improve Your Hitting Percentage
Here are proven strategies to boost your efficiency:
1. Reduce Unforced Errors
Every error directly hurts your percentage. Focus on keeping the ball in bounds, especially on free balls and out-of-system plays. It's okay to hit a controlled shot that keeps the rally going rather than going for a risky kill.
2. Work on Shot Selection
Recognize when to swing hard versus when to place the ball strategically. Against a good block, a well-placed tip or roll shot can be more effective than trying to hit through it.
3. Improve Your Approach Timing
Better timing means better contact, which leads to more kills and fewer errors. Work with your setter to develop timing on different sets.
4. Study the Block
Learn to see the block before you swing. Hit around it, off it, or use angles to avoid it entirely. Smart hitters find ways to score against any defense.
5. Track Your Stats Consistently
You can't improve what you don't measure. Recording your stats after every game helps you identify patterns and track progress over time.
